In-School Programs

These programs have been created by the staff of Ellington Youth Services; our hope in creating these programs that the children will have a fun interactive learning experience.

There are several main themes that are carried through the entire K-4 curriculums which are reinforced and expanded on each year.  The themes are improving self-esteem, team building, communication skills, stress management and recognizing and coping with feelings.

Querks: Kindergarten Classrooms

Querks in querk pose

This social skills program was created in 2003 and based on the childrens

book  “The Querks.” The Querks is a group of 5 animal siblings who are

starting to explore the world and discover new animals (trying to make

friends).  The skills focused on are: self-control, awareness of feelings,

coping skills, manners and self-esteem.  These topics are taught to the

students through games, activities and discussions.

Bucket Fillers

This program encourages positive behavior as children see how very easy it is to express kindness, appreciation, and love on a daily basis. In class we read a book written by Carol McCloud, "Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids" to help children understand the importance of "filling other people's buckets." The power behind their words can make someone feel good and inturn make themselves feel good too!

Team Builders: Second Grade Classrooms

This is a conflict resolution program with themes of team work, recognizing and dealing with feelings, how conflict escalates and ways of handling conflict and stress management.  The students will participate in various learning activities including games, discussions, creating learning tools for themselves.  For example, the students will be creating anger thermometers which are used to recognize the different levels of anger.  The children will learn that they have control over their feelings and how to express them.

Peacemakers: Third Grade Classrooms

This program focuses on how we see ourselves and the impact ones

actions have with others.  Through story telling and activities the students learn

to set goals, give compliments to peers and positive self-talk.

All-Star Communicators: Fourth Grade Classrooms

The main goals for the program are to increase positive peer relationships, teach and reinforce the use of conflict resolution skills and recognize and cope with feelings.  The use role plays, I statements, discussions of bullying and team building activities.  This program will provide the students with tools to assist in the choices they need to make in their crucial pre-teen years.
